It gives ball bearing smooth action to the press wheels and makes it easy to adjust them so you can keep them centered over the seed furrow," says Tom Smith, A & T Enterprises, Sherwood, Mich. Smith says that as the closing wheel pivot point wears it allows the press wheels to wobble. His "Press Fix" kit uses a sealed ball bearing on both sides of the frame that replaces the original bushing. You weld a pre-drilled plate onto the closing wheel frame in three places, then bolt the bearing housing onto it. The ball bearing supports an eccentric and nut that mount on a bolt. To adjust the position of the press wheels, you loosen the nut, reposition the closing wheel frame, then tighten the nut back up. "The ball bearing eliminates the problem of worn bushings or loose bolts and ensures smooth operation and long life. It'll outlast the original parts many times over because the bearing has a large surface area and is sealed and pre-lubed," says Smith. "There's no need to throw away your worn press wheel frames or send them in for re-pair. "We built it because we couldn't keep the closing wheels centered on our 16-row front-fold Deere planter and couldn't find anything on the market that we liked.
