The "Viper II" parallel linkage-mounted fertilizer opener consists of a coulter and 4-in. wide gauge wheel supported by parallel linkage that clamps onto the planter toolbar. The angle of the blade can be adjusted up to 6 degrees, depending on soil density, to pro-vide an adequate slot for the fertilizer. A pin that locks into a series of holes in the gauge wheel is used to control gauge wheel depth. A dial next to the gauge wheel indicates its depth relative to the other gauge wheels on the planter. Spring tension on the parallel linkage controls downpressure on the coulter and can be quickly adjusted by changing the position of a lock handle mounted on the parallel linkage. "It's the easiest-to-adjust fertilizer opener on the market and offers the most precise depth control," says Pat Whalen. "The greater the angle of the blade, the more soil is thrown outward. Most gauge wheels are only 2 in. wide. We made our gauge wheel 4 inches wide so that it can run on top of the coulter-disrupted soil which isolates the coulter and keeps it operating at a consistent depth." Sells for $575 per row.
