It looks like a soup ladle but is meant to be used in an entirely different way. To skim off fat, slowly submerge it into the bowl or pan, pushing straight down into the liquid (Don't scoop like you would with a ladle or it won't work, cautions Kuhlman). Liquid will filter into the cup through the deep grooves along the upper edge that keep out solid food particles.
When the cup is full, hold the FatSkimmer over the pot for a few seconds until the fat separates from the broth and collects at the top of the skimming cup. Then pull the trigger on the handle to re-lease the pure broth out the bottom of the ladle back into the pot until only fat remains in the cup.
To skim fat off gravy, which is usually made in a shallow pan, just stand the FatSkimmer on the counter and pour the gravy into the cup to separate it.
