"It works like a Swiss Army axe," says Bruce Moore, president, Forrest Tool Co., Mendocino, Calif.
The "Multi-Max" comes with a 36-in. long hickory handle or a 34-in. long unbreakable fiberglass poly handle. Mounted permanently on the handle is an axe head that comes with a thick leather sheath to protect the edge of the axe. The attachments lock into a socket on back of the axe head. The beveled socket and tapered attachments tighten during use and are held in place by a hitch pin for safety. All the attachments come in a canvas carrying bag that fits under your vehicle's seat.
Converting to any of the tools is quick and simple. To convert the axe to a shovel you insert the base of the shovel into the axe head and attach the safety hitch pin. The shovel, 9 in. long and 8 in. wide, has a 1/2-in. wide turned-over lip at the top for applying down pressure with your foot. A beveled edge helps it cut into packed dirt.
To convert to a rake you remove the shovel, insert the base of the rake into the axe head, and use a thumb screw to hold it in place. The rake has 3 1/2-in. long forks at one end. Flipping the rake over provides nearly 7 in. of flat surface for clearing small brush, etc.
The 3 1/2-in. mattock works like a grub hoe and is said to be ideal for chipping logs, cutting roots, or trenching.
The 7-in. long sharp pick has a point sharpened almost down to the size of a pencil head. It's ideal for getting into tight spots. For heavier work, a broad pick with a 1-in. wide face can be used.
