Build Your Own Horsefly Trap LIVESTOCK Horses/Mules If you’ve got a problem with horseflies you might want to build a trap like the one made by Dan Owsley Salem Ind Based on the fact that horseflies are visual hunters Owsley starts with easily seen black garbage bags wrapped around a wooden frame basin Unnoticed by the pesky flies are two sheets of clear Plexiglas secured at a 45-degree angle over the garbage bag When the flies come in to check out what the black bags are they hit the Plexiglas and fall into the soapy water below and drown Daily horsefly counts appear to be impressive - in the hundreds However there is some maintenance required Apparently horseflies are less likely to be fooled if they smell dead relatives so the soapy water needs to be changed daily The Plexiglas also needs to be kept clean and scratch-free For details check out www littlethings com/horsefly-backyard-trap
