Wind And Sun-Driven Bird Scarer BIRD CONTROL Bird Control 34-3-33 This new-style bird scarer uses both the wind and sun to chase pest birds away.
Remo, Inc., Valencia, Calif., introduced Sound Shapes at the World Ag Expo in Tulare, Calif. Sound Shapes create musical sounds and reflected flashes of light.
Holographic, metalized film strips reflect light when moved by the wind. The reflective strips set inside laminated wooden frames in different shapes and colors, and they swivel underneath a fiberglass, clothesline-type pole. As the reflective strips knock against each other, the different shapes make different sounds.
A 2-ft. long "Sparkle Strip" is riveted to each end of the pole to create even more movement in the wind.
"The metalized film strips strike each other randomly in the wind, producing a pleasant musical sound that won't disturb neighbors or farm animals," says Nick Valdez. "They won't frighten all the birds all the time, but where we've tested them in our own vineyard and in 8 to 10 local vineyards, the success rate is about 85 to 90 percent. The number of Sound Shapes required may vary depending on the size of the property and weather conditions.
"Sound Shapes look so nice that you can use them on your patio, where they'll make wonderful wind chimes. The sound they make is absolutely beautiful and will put you to sleep at night."
The wood frames are made from the same material used in Remo drums and make a distinctive sound. In fact, Remo, the inventor of Remo drums, came up with the idea to use the wood to enclose the reflective strips. "I'm in the music products business as well as the music therapy business, and I see Sound Shapes as an educational and therapy tool," says Remo.
Sound Shapes sell for $29.95 plus S&H. Valdez says he's looking for dealers in other states.
