Over-the-Road 5th Wheel Grain Wagon WAGONS/TRAILERS Miscellaneous 14-5-29 If you've got a long haul from field to storage, you'll want to take a look at this gooseneck grain wagon built by custom trailer maker John Gerritsen of Rock Rapids Repair in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
"As far as I know, there's nothing like it on the market," says Gerritsen, who custom-built the 325-bu. wagon for a farmer customer who wanted a grain hauler he could pull at highway speeds. "Normal straight-tongue grain carts can't be pulled at much more than 20 mph but this wagon rides smoothly at high speeds even with a full load. A standard 3/4-ton pickup can handle it."
He mounted a new Demco gravity flow box on a tandem axle frame he built from scratch. The frame and 8-ft. gooseneck are built right into the box so it looks like they came from the factory together. The frame is fitted with rubber torque axles which eliminate all leaf springs and shocks. "They're more expensive but they ride bet-ter and last longer," says Gerritsen.
He builds the gooseneck haulers for $900 to $1,000, not counting the box.
