Built like a giant hole saw, the big 20-in. dia. unit drills down into a stump and extracts a wooden core. Powered by a minimum 110 hp. tractor, the pto-powered machine takes less than a minute to bore down through any stump. It digs to a 4 to 5-ft depth, deep enough to bore through the stump to the dirt below. An operator can remove as many cores as necessary to eliminate the stump.
"The biggest advantages are speed and the fact that it doesn't disturb the ground around the stump," says Romolo Ferri, manufacturer.
The big borer has a set of cutting teeth around the rim of the cutting cylinder. They'll cut through "hundreds of stumps" before requiring replacement. The borer itself is hydraulic-powered. Tractor pto powers a pump mounted at the rear-end of the machine.
