Thy Neighbor's Talent: A Directory of Arts & Crafts FARM HOME Miscellaneous 11-2-31 "When Jim and I were going to get married, we needed a cake maker, flower arranger and a male western singer. But, it's difficult to find people with those talents out here in the country. We finally found the right people but it made us realize that there are others who'd like an easier way to find people with specific talents," says Zoe McClintock, Baldwin, N. Dak.
Soon after their wedding, the McClintocks launched a new "farming sideline" business of publishing "Thy Neighbor's Talent" ù a directory with listings of more than 2,000 talents and crafts ranging from clocks made from antique tractor seats to wreaths made from pheasant feathers. "We compile the information on our home computer, then print it out so each copy of the book is personal. The listings are also updated virtually every week," Zoe notes.
Each listing contains the crafter's talent, name and phone number. The listings are free and a crafter can list up to four talents.
Zoe says that many of the crafters are farmers and ranch couples who use their "cottage industry" as a supplemental source of income.
The 1987 version of their directory features more than 1,000 people and 2,200 talents. Besides North Dakota, there are listings from South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Wyoming and Canada.
The directory also includes a calendar of arts and crafts shows held throughout the upper Midwest, complete with locations and phone numbers,
The new 1987 directory sells for $6.25. The McClintocks also publish a monthly newsletter ($6 per year) that lists upcoming arts and crafts shows whose dates weren't determined when the directory was published.
