The three Pacey brothers farm 1,000 acres and run a custom hay business. Last year alone they baled 6,300 round bales and 5,000 small square bales. They put up the bale storage building for their own hay. When stored inside, it sells at a premium.
"Most of the poles used on the building were 35 ft. long and about 8-in. dia. at the top. They were set in the ground 7 1/2 ft. deep with about 1,000 lbs. of sand packed into each hole. This gives us 27 ft. of clearance in the center 47-ft. clear span section of the 80 by 160-ft. building," says Franklin.
The west side of the building was closed in to protect machinery stored there. The other three sides are open, and there's a 5-ft. overhang along one side in case they ever decide to feed cattle out of the building.
To stack bales 5-high, the Pacey brothers modified a Farmhand F25-B hay stacker, which is designed to lift 3,500 lbs. to a height of 22 ft. They strengthened the side arms and built a unique side-shift bale spear to replace the hay stacker's grapple forks. A hydraulic motor shifts the spear from side to side as needed when stacking bales. A sprocket on the hydraulic motor drives a roller chain that attaches to the base of the spear. It shifts bales out beyond the side of the loader, which makes it easier to stack around poles and along the sides of the building. The stacker also tips bales up and down as needed. The stacker mounts on a 100-hp. Massey Ferguson 1105, one of 30 tractors the Paceys operate. The tractor is fitted with a roll guard and canopy.
To transport bales, the Paceys use a converted beer truck. They removed the van body from the 1976 diesel cab-over C8000 tandem axle Ford and made a flat bed with 2 1/2-in. by 10-in. planks laid crosswise over 7-in. channel iron stringers. The truck can carry up to 26 big bales.
