Hydraulic Drive PTO For Pickups PICKUPS Accessories 1-4-12 A hydraulic drive pto-system from Simonsen Mfg., Quimby, Iowa, makes it practical to use pickups as "second tractors" for spreading fertilizer, spraying and other jobs.
"The system was designed primarily for fertilizer dealers who do custom application with 4-wheel drive pickups but it's also available to any and all interested farmers," reports Richard Ravnsborg, sales manager.
He notes that a key advantage of the system is that the pto shaft speed is maintained at a constant 540 rpms (or whatever speed desired) which is important in spreading fertilizer. "It maintains this constant shaft speed, delivering a maximum of about 10 hp regardless of engine or ground speed. Speed of your pickup can be varied to fit field conditions, resulting in more acres spread each day and with less chance of engine damage because of overloading," explains Ravnsborg.
The Simonsen H-17 hydraulic pto drive is available for most makes and models, whether conventional 4-speed or automatic transmission. It includes a hydraulic pump mounted on the transmission, a valve mounted under the box to regulate the speed of the power shaft, a hydraulic motor and an oil reserve tank mounted in the left front corner of the pickup bed.
The pto drive is available with an optional H-10 shock absorbing hitch/bumper, providing a "tractor standard" drawbar and pto for the proper hookup of a spreader and other equipment. The H-10 is a combination bumper, motor mount and shock absorbing drawbar. Its drawbar can be extended 5¢ in. or moved to either side for easy one man hookup.
Once the spreader has been "pinned", the truck can be backed up to lock the drawbar in the towing position.
"Installation of the pto drive is fairly complex and, in most cases, we recommend that the truck be brought to our shop," says Ravnsborg. Cost of the system, including installation, is $1,125, plus $250 for the optional H-10 hitch/bumper.
