Danish Farmers Mount Choppers on Front of Big Square Balers HAY & FORAGE HARVESTING Balers (6) 17-1-23 You can increase the volume of hay in big square bales up to 25 percent by chopping hay before it enters the bale chamber, ac-cording to Danish farmers who've started mounting chopper units on the front of their New Holland, Hesston, Rivierre Casalis, Vicon, and other big balers.
The idea is to take the chopping mechanism off a self loading forage wagon (the Danish manufacturer Taarup makes chop-ping wagons, along with other European manufacturers) and mount it just in front of the regular pickup. An add-on gearbox "intercepts" the pto drive line to take a shaft down to a belt-drive that powers the chop-per. Chopped material is thrown directly onto the pickup.
Farmers say the conversion adds only about 30 hp. to the power required by the baler and doesn't reduce the work rate significantly. (Farm Contractor Magazine)
