Richard Bray, Wilmington, Ill., says there are thousands of serious accidents every year involving kids under 6 years of age. Most happen when kids reach up and touch burners or grab pan handles. Accidents happen to adults when handles hang over the stove edge and get knocked off accidentally. Bray's 4-in. high shield keeps handles over the stovetop.
Shield is made of clear Lexan non-flammable plastic. "If you hold a torch on it it'll melt but won't bum," says Bray. The shield is 4 in. high and as wide as the stovetop. It's held in place by two 35-lb. magnets. Holders are adjustable so shield can be positioned as close to edge of stove as possible.
