Used Guard Rails make Great Fencing FENCING Fence Systems 16-6-15 Business is booming for an Iowa farmer who started a sideline business selling used highway guard rails that are salvaged from highway reconstruction projects.
The heavy-duty galvanized steel rails come in 13 1/2 ft. long sections that weigh 90 lbs. apiece (26-ft sections also avail-able). Don Stickle, Anamosa, Iowa, says he buys them from suppliers around the country who pick them up when highways get rebuilt.
"They're extremely strong and make great fencing or corrals. We space posts every 12 ft. and lag bolt the rails to the posts. Rails are pre-drilled. You can cut them with a torch or chop saw. I've also used them to make feedbunks and I'm in the process of building a hay shed, using rails as upright supports," says Stickle, who sells the rails by the truckload ($1.25 per ft. for 6,000 ft. or more, shipping included) orinany smaller amount picked up at his farm.
