Canned Colostrum for Pigs, Calves LIVESTOCK Health 13-2-28 Latest new way to keep newbom pigs, lambs and calves alive and healthy is to give them a shot of "canned" dairy cow colostrom.
Nursemate, from Sterling Technology, is produced by collecting first milk after calving from selected dairy herds. It's concentrated, laced with lactobacillus, and manufactured into a paste form which requires no refrigeration and no mixing. Hasa shelf life of about a year, says Randy Kjelden, president. "Some hog and beef cattleproducers give all newborn animals ù regardless of condition ù a shot of Nursemate to get them off to a fast, healthy start."
For hogs, a single pump-type dispenser bottle, enough to treat 24 newborn pigs, sells for $6.95 ($83.40 fora case of 12). For calves, a single dose bottle is $2.85 ($34.20 for a case of 12). For lambs, a single dose bottle is $2.05 ($24.60 for a case of 12).
