Self-Propelled Auger Mounts on Old Swather GRAIN HANDLING Augers (4) 15-4-26 Canadian Eddy Myrah "self-propelled" his 8-in. dia. auger to make it easy to move around his farm without any help. The Holdfast, Sask., farmer mounted a 60-ft. long Sakundiak auger on a 103 Versa-tile swather. "I was at an auction sale and in looking over the machinery, spotted the swather. After examining it I decided it was just what I needed to carry my auger so I bought it for $900," says Myrah. He removed the header, engine and all the drives and then added a second castoring wheel on the rear. "It makes a strong, stable frame to carry the auger. Removing the drives left the center rear of the machine clear for the auger to go through." Myrah fitted the swather frame with a different engine and a hydraulic drive system. "I installed a Ford motor from a 1/2-ton pickup on one side to drive three hydraulic pumps. One is 30 gpm and drives the auger motor. The other two are smaller pumps that drive the two hydraulic motors on the wheels and the hydraulic cylinders on the front and rear of auger. On the other side of the swather frame I mounted an oil reservoir, gas tank, seat and hydraulic valves that control everything. "When traveling forward you sit in the seat. To go backward, you can stand or sit on the gas tank which lets you guide the auger into the bin without having to look behind you. "I put a hydraulic flow control valve in the line that runs to the auger motor so I can run it at any speed. Running at a slow speed works good when you're shoveling grain in. `By raising the rear of the auger I can bring the head of the auger almost to the ground.
