Portable Double Chainsaw Sawmill WOODLOT EQUIPMENT Chain Saws 20-5-37 Nothing on the market can compete with it for price, portability, stability, safety, or capacity, says Fred Gore about his company's new portable one-man sawmill that's powered by two chain saws.
The sawmill, which comes apart quickly for transport in the back of a pickup, consists of two 8-ft. sections of track and a 22-in. wide carriage equipped with a single chain saw-type cutterbar powered by a chainsaw power unit mounted on either end. The cuterbar is fitted with a special ripping chain designed for sawing lumber.
"It can be easily set up and operated by one person. It cuts logs up to 30 in. in diameter and any length," says Gore. "You can cut up to 1,200 board feet per day. It sells for $3,500 compared to bandsaw mills that sell for $7,000 to $50,000 and can cut only 20 in. wide. It works better than other chain saw-powered mills which are fast, cheap, and lightweight but aren't very accurate. Our unit is designed as a sawmill, not as an attachment to a chain saw, so it's very accurate.
"The carriage weighs 75 lbs with the powerheads and 45 lbs. without them. Each 8-ft. track section weighs 65 lbs. " T h e specially-designed ripping chain is designed to go with the grain of the wood. It leaves a smooth finish on the wood that's comparable to any other sawmill on the market. A standard chain saw file is all that's needed to sharpen the chain.
"By loosening two nuts you can remove either power head from the sawmill and mount a standard chain saw bar on it for use like a regular chainsaw."
A single throttle lever is used to control both power heads and a hand-operated crank is used to raise or lower them, allowing you to adjust board thickness from 1/8 to 26 in. thick.
The standard models handle logs up to 13 1/2 ft. long. Optional track extensions are available.
