New Spot Sprayer SPRAYING New Sprayers 2-4-23 You don't have to mix or carry a lot of water to spot spray weeds with the new Herbi sprayer introduced by Micron West, Houston, Texas. "Conventional spray nozzles dispense random-size droplets and require 50 to 200 gal. of water per acre," the manufacturer points out. "The Herbi, on the other hand, requires only a fraction of the watergenerally 20 times less per acre - than is needed with conventional sprayers." The secret of the Herbi is its spinning disk, which dispenses controlled-size droplets. All you carry with it is a 5 pint bottle which gives thorough spraying coverage for over 3 of an acre or more at walking speed (33,000 sq. ft. or more). The sprayer's 250 micron-size droplets fall in a 4 ft. swath when held 8 in, above the target weed, virtually eliminating the problem of drift. The sprayer weighs only 7 lbs. and operates on 8 D-sized batteries. Under normal usage the batteries are good for 100 hrs. of operation. "The Herbi is designed to use no more of the herbicide product than recommended by the manufacturer," a spokesman for Micron West points out. Depending upon the crop, the manufacturer recommends 3 different operating positions: 1. For lower growing crops, the operator, as he walks along, holds the sprayer at a 40 degree angle about 8 in. above the crop. 2 For taller crops, the operator can rest the sprayer on his shoulder with the tank behind and the nozzle in front. 3. For spraying so the operator does not walk through the area which has been treated, the sprayer can be carried on the shoulder with the nozzle behind and the container bottle in front. In all of the above positions, the spray falls in a controlled band approximately 4 ft. wide. "Most herbicides can be sprayed effectively with the Herbi. We prefer not to recommend particular herbicides because local conditions vary," the manufacturer points out. "However, the following and many others have been successfully used with the Herbi: Roundup, Paraquat, 2,4-D, the dinitros, atrazine, Preforan, Lasso, Catoran, Evik, Carbyne, MCPA, Avenge or Avadex." The manufacturer notes that flowable and EC (emulsiafiable concentrate) type herbicides are better suited for Herbi application than wettable powders. Wettable powders, however, can be successfully used if applied with a surfactant. Suggested retail is $99.95.
