"I designed it to eliminate the aggravation of regular work stoppages to adjust and tighten gathering chains and the rotary knife drive chain," says McKee.
Installation involves adding idler sprockets to each gathering chain. You also put a longer bolt through the existing drive chain idler sprocket. This bolt also goes through the added gathering chain idler sprocket so both chains are kept tight with pull on the same bolt. A heavy-duty 6-in. spring connects the one side, with its gathering chain, and the other with the gathering chain and drive chain, to keep them tight.
McKee points out that the kit tightens all the chains except those on the outside, which are readily accessible.
"The automatic tightener takes about 15 minutes per row to install and there's no welding," says McKee.
A kit for a 4-row head sells for $195; $395 for an 8-row head.
