And rightly so because who would have guessed that the "best scoop shovel money can buy" nowadays is made of wood. The new all-wood shovel reportedly has all the advantages of aluminum, plus a few exclusive features of its own, explains Jim Gilleran, president, McCausey Lumber, Detroit. The firm markets a German-made snow shovel made of wood and is now finalizing plans for introducing the new all-wood scoop shovel. "It's fireproof, a feature which is especially important in grain elevators where grain dust poses a constant fire hazard. What's more, it wears better than aluminum, is just as light in weight, doesn't warp or dent, and slides easily into the grain," says Gilleran. Individual shovels are made of 14 thin layers of beachwood veneer which are soaked in a special resin, then hot-pressed and molded into a one-piece shovel measuring 16 in. across the bottom. Individual shovels have wooden handles and a plastic hand grip. Plans for marketing the just-introduced scoop shovel are being finalized.
