Remote Control Moves Side Roll Irrigators IRRIGATION Irrigation Systems 6-3-26 It's difficult and time-consuming to walk over crops to the center of the field to start and move side roll sprinkler irrigation systems To solve the problem, Ted Hieb, Rupert, Idaho, invented a mechanical starter control which can be operated from one end of the sprinkler line. Hieb notes that an electrical control system he used in the past had slip rings which always caused trouble, and that some radio controlled start-stop systems are occasionally activated by aircraft flying overhead ù usually with disastrous results. Therefore, he built his system with no electrical contacts to corrode or short out. By pulling on one wire, he can start the motor, move the sprinklerforward or in reverse and shut it off again ù all from the end of the sprinkler. The unit cost about $150 to $200 to build, says Hieb, who figures it could be installed on almost any side roll sprinkler in an hour or less. The control will work on almost any side roll wheel line system. Hieb figures that with each move of an average sprinkler, his control system would save 10-15 minutes and a lot of effort now spent walking to the pipe line drive unit.
