Deere Displays New Tractors

Heading the impressive new lineup of five new "40" series tractors, shown publicly for the first time at the recent Minnesota State Fair, is the model 4840, Deere's "biggest yet" in two wheel drive at 180 pto hp. Other new models which you'll be seeing at upcoming fairs and shows this fall are the 4640 at 155 pto hp (replaces the 150 hp 4630); the 4440 at 130 hp (replaces the 125 hp 4430); the 4240 at 110 hp (replaces the 100 hp 4230); and the 4040 at 90 pto hp (replaces the 80 hp 4030).
The four biggest new models (4840, 4640, 4440 and 4240) are all equipped with the same 466 cu. in engine block. (The smaller model 4040 has a 404 cu. in. engine). Turbo charging, intercooling and other features are used to boost power output from the one engine block from 110 to 180 pto hp.
"The new models aren't the old tractors with new engines," explains a Deere spokesman. "We've beefed up the transmissions in each model in proportion to the extra horsepower it produces, and made other improvements, such as extending the wheelbase, improving the cab and beefing up the rear end."
Deere also has introlduced two new smaller horsepower tractors to fill the gap from 19 hp (its biggest lawn and garden tractor - the model 400) and 40 hp (its previous smallest field-size tractor - the 2040). The new model 850 is rated at 22 pto hp, and the new 950 at 27 pto hp.
Suggested base retail cost (FOB the factory) of Deere's new 180 hp 4840 is $33,194.70 ($38,183.70 with dual wheels and tires, weights, remote cylinder and several other options). It features a 6 cyl., variable speed turbobuilt intercooled diesel engine, power differential lock, power shift transmission with 8 speeds forward and 4 in reverse, 1,000 rpm pto and brand new "big" tires (42 in. dia.).
