Automatic Vent Lock Stops Dryer Heat Loss ENERGY Miscellaneous 10-1-30 "It's like sealing up a 4-in. hole in your wall," says Wayne Steinke, Hope, N. Dak., who's invented a new closing vent for clothes dryers that seals tight. Steinke says most dryer vents don't work. "They stick open due to frost build-up, making the dryer area one of the coldest areas of the house. This new Positive Closing Vent always seals tight and can't freeze up," he says. The idea for the vent came to Steinke in his own home. "I used to go into the clothes dryer room to brush my teeth and that blast of cold air aggravated me," he says. He first tried to seal the vent tube with a lightweight styrofoam ball that would blow off the tube when the dryer was on and fall back into place when it was off, but he says it made too much noise. Production models have a floating lightweight cap that lifts off the tube when the dryer's on and locks back down tightly when it's off. The cap is protected by an outer cover that also keeps out mice, bugs and birds. The new vent quickly installs in place of the regular dryer vent with two screws. Sells for $23.99, including postage.
