Safety Flag For Wide Equipment SECURITY/SAFETY Miscellaneous 8-4-22 "Equipment keeps getting wider and we needed a way to make it more visible and safer to transport down the road," says Al Stoutenburg, Sandusky, Mich., who solved the problem by coming up with a new stowaway orange flag that can be used on any wide farm equipment. The flag stows in a small tube that clamps to the outer edge of equipment. When traveling down the road, the operator simply pulls it out of the tube and mounts it in a small metal flag holder, also mounted at the edge of the equipment. The large, 12 by 14-in. orange banner alerts motorists to the danger of the protruding equipment. "I don't feel slow moving vehicle signs at the rear of the tractor offer enough warning when equipment sticks out from the side of the tractor. It's almost impossible to miss this flag, however," says Stoutenburg, noting that once equipment is off the road, the flag simply rolls up and stows back inside the tube. Leland Schultz, extension safety specialist at the University of Minnesota, told FARM SHOW that he thinks the safety flag idea is a good one, provided other safety precautions are also observed. "Standard safety recommendations call for flashing warning lights on the tractor and reflectors front and back. When hauling wide machinery, there should be a warning vehicle in front of the tractor and one in back and both should have their flashing warning lights on."
