"It's a lot easier than roping. It's especially nice when you're catching calves with scours because that can get real messy," says Lee.
The men, who work for United Farmers of Alberta, a Canadian cooperative, got the idea on their own ranches. The device is telescopic, ranging from 6 ft. long when retracted (so it'll fit behind the seat in a pickup) to 10 ft. long when locked in the extended position. The handle is made of lightweight extruded aluminum with a spring steel hook at the end. The hook is heat-treated so it won't bend, unlike an early prototype that bent easily when catching a calf. It hooks the animal just above the hoof and does no damage to the animal. It'll handle newborn calves on up to 3 to 4 months.
