Tragedy Triggers Safety Reminder SECURITY/SAFETY Miscellaneous 2-2-15 "I drove into the yard just as he had stopped breathing," recalls Leoana Schalow. "The kids had tried to revive him, but couldn't."
The memory of that day two years ago when her husband was killed in a tragic farm accident prompted Mrs. Schalow, of rural Mankato, Minn., to design a safety decal that is now being distributed by the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation. Mrs. Schalow urges other farm wives to take it upon themselves to affix the decal in a prominent place on farm equipment and elsewhere, as a personalized message to their husbands: "Please be careful - we love you".
The death of Duane Schalow, 46, left his wife with five children. Schalow was killed when his arm was entangled in a corn chopper. The machine severed his arm above the elbow and he died 20 minutes later from loss of blood.
The Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation Women's Committee is making the new safety decal available to country Farm Bureaus, or to anyone else who may be interested. The decal measures 4 by 41/4 in., is red and white vinyl and has an adhesive back. It is made of material which allows it to be used outdoors as well as indoors. Cost, less postage, is 15` each in lots under 100, and 10` each for lots over 100.
