Cooler for Livestock Trailers LIVESTOCK Handling 13-4-32 A first-of-its-kind "travel cooler" sprays water on livestock in transit to avoid death loss and shrinkage on the way to market.
The cooler consists of a 20-gal. water tank that goes in the cab of the truck or in the truck box and 15 ft. of hose fitted with 4 nozzles. A small 12-volt pump plugs into the cigarette lighter and is controlled by a simple toggle switch. The hose is strung along one side of the trailer up as high as possible. The 180? nozzles are spaced evenly along the length of the hose (where possible, the hose can be strung down the middle of the trailer and fitted with 360? nozzles).
"The driver turns on the water every 7 or 8 min. for a couple minutes, enough to get the animals wet so they'll cool down by evaporation. Because the operator controls the pump, he can spray more or less water depending on the weather," says Harold Stump, company representative.
Sells for $195. A larger system for full-size trailers with 30 ft. of hose, 6 nozzles, and a 30-gal. tank sells for $249.
