Hydraulic Mower Converted to Belt Drive HAY & FORAGE HARVESTING Mowers (38) 16-1-10 B.L. Uhnken, Jacksonville, Ill., needed a mower for roadsides. He wanted one that would mow in vertical position or drop down to a 45? angle below the horizontal.
Uhnken located an IHC highway mower he liked but the problem was that it was hydraulic-powered. With the mower mounted on the side of his widened-out Deere tractor, he didn't have direr t access for an driveshaft to drive the external pump mounted on the sicklebar mower.
To solve the problem, Uhnken simply ran a jackshaft from the mower pump back to a double-V pulley at the back of the tractor. It's belt-driven by a larger pulley mounted directly on the pto.
Uhnken says he's used the mower 4 years without problems. The design of the mower provides extra stability on steep hillsides because the heaviest part of the mower rides on the ground.
