Two-Way Plow TILLAGE EUIPMENT Plows 8-5-25 The Wye "Double-Digger" teams a moldboard plow together with a rotary chisel in order to dig out subsoil and mix it with topsoil.
Developed at Wye College, London, the new tillage tool has been tested at experimental test stations around the world, including Purdue University in Indiana.
The Double-Digger consists of a rotating chisel plow and a 1-bottom plow. The rotating chisel digs down to a depth of 20 in., pulling up subsoil in the furrow opened up by the plow on its previous pass. Immediately behind, working at a depth of 9 in., the moldboard turns a layer of topsoil over the worked-up subsoil.
According to researchers at Wye College, the new tool breaks through the hardpan in most soils, improving soil drainage and improving water availability by promoting deeper root penetration. It's also designed to enrich the soil by bringing up deep subsoils and mixing them with depleted topsoils, boosting yields and improving crop quality and uniformity. Researchers point out that the chisel actually provides forward tractor thrust, helping pull the plow along.
