A Fingerprint Opens This Electronic Padlock SECURITY/SAFETY Ideas Canadian inventor David Tao often had problems remembering the combination to the padlock for his gym locker in college One day it dawned on him that fingerprint technology used in security systems and phones might work on padlocks With that idea as the saying goes the rest is history Tao collaborated with a designer and electronics engineer to develop Tapplock the world’s first padlock that opens in less than one second when a fingerprint touches its tiny screen Tao’s invention uses adaptive algorithm technology embedded in a state-of-the-art fingerprint sensor that’s accurate for up to 500 unique fingerprints Lock owners can also use an app on their phone to track who opens their lock and when or to unlock the device remotely If those two methods fail to unlock the device a backup Morse code method also unlocks it Tao says a Tapplock is really ideal to provide access to locked sheds bins or buildings without having to worry about keys Even if a fingerprint isn’t logged into the device the owner can unlock it with his phone The Tapplock is crafted from Zamak 3 zinc alloy metal with a cut-resistant 7mm reinforced stainless steel shackle It has a layered and reinforced body with anti-shim and anti-pry technologies The device is water-resistant when closed and fully functional between 14 and 140 degrees F It uses one battery that lasts up to a year on a single two-hour charge Users can check the remaining power with the Tapplock app Tapplock is available online from the company’s website in silver gun metal and midnight black One lock costs $99 and the company offers two for $165 Tapplock was featured on Dragon’s Den Canada’s version of Shark Tank Contact: FARM SHOW Followup Tapplock 6 Belsize Dr Toronto Ontario Canada www tapplock com
