Feeder Designed To Survive Hungry Bears? FARM HOME Miscellaneous This is the toughest looking bird feeder we’ve seen at FARM SHOW and we look forward to finding out if it is as bear-proof as it looks The feeder is braced with angle iron and heavy-duty hardware It was built for Cornelius Conley III by his son son-in-law and grandsons “I totally love it ” Conley says about his Father’s Day gift Over the years he’s had many feeders destroyed by bears on the family’s Pennsylvania cabin property He’s hopeful the feeder which they’ve dubbed “Alcatraz” has better success The design was a team effort says his son Jake Conley and was completed over a few sessions “We used all-thread rods for strength to tie it all together - and to look cool ” he says Angle iron secures the bottom to the sides and protects the front and back “The weakness of the bird feeder is the top So one side of the roof is screwed down and we put hasps to lock the other side down ” Conley explains With a chain running through eyebolts the feeder was hung this fall on a 6 by 6 beam used for a swing during the summer In the past bears destroyed feeders during the fall in their search for food before hibernation The Conleys say they will let us know if their “totally overkill” feeder holds up against the brute strength of hungry bears Contact: FARM SHOW Followup Cornelius Conley III 4649 Meadowgreen Dr Pittsburgh Penn 15236 ph 412 338-3550; cconley@hillmanco com
