Spill-Proof Shield For Silo Blowers CROP STORAGE Silos (50) 8-6-6 "It keeps haylage and silage from blowing away as you empty forage boxes into the silo blower," says John Murphy, Lena, Wis. farmer and inventor of the new Forage Saver.
"The device prevents the whirlwind around the blower intake from blowing away valuable feed. It also eliminates the pile of chaff left beside the blower," points out Murphy, who's tested the invention for three years on his farm.
The Forage Saver's pivot arm bolts to the blower frame. Attached to this arm is a "U" shaped frame, which pivots into nearly any position to match up with the wagon discharge hopper.
Ten, 12-in. wide, overlapping plastic strips hang from the U-shaped frame. They prevent the wind from whirling the crop away but, since they're loose at the bottom, they don't restrict forage flow out of the wagon and cause plugging problems, says Murphy. He notes it's the same plastic used in "strip doors" and can withstand temperatures as low as 25? below zero.
Available to fit most blowers, the Forage Saver sells for $339.
