Home built air reel COMBINES Headers 13-1-23 Air Reel Australian farmer Neil Bennie, who farms near Wirrulla on Eyre's Peninsula, builds much of the equipment used on his grain farm. Pictured above is the air reel he mounted on his International 711 combine. The reel, which consists of a 6-in. dia. tube running across the width of the header with 1 1/2-in. dia. down tubes, is similar to air reels already on the market in the U.S. Bennie mounts the "reel" just ahead and above the cutterbar on the header. He notes that air-power works particularly well on short-stalked crops which are the most difficult to pull into a header with a conventional bat-type reel. Bennie also built his own air seeder (with the air blower mounted right up beside the radiator fan on his Steiger tractor), a 100-ft. wide chain harrow, and an "endless" belt system for handling grain that makes use of truck tire tubes to get around corners.
