One-Auger Grain Distribution System GRAIN HANDLING Augers (4) 7-4-6 "Necessity is the mother of invention," says Harlan Johnson, Litchfield, Minn., who designed and built a unique grain auger pivot that connects his center bin with four other bins and completely eliminates the need for an expensive grain leg distribution system.
Johnson had built two bins and wanted to expand. But, he didn't like the prices of auger legs. This led him to design an auger pivot for his center bin that revolves 360? on an angle iron track built around the bin. The track, and the catwalk below, are independently supported on legs that extend to the ground. The system isn't fastened to the bin at all.
Johnson's bins vary in size from 24 to 30 ft. but the distance from center hole to center hole is 32 1/2 ft. The auger transfers easily in minutes by raising the auger out of the bin and swinging it, by hand, to the next bin.
The auger is powered by a 2-h.p. electric motor. To dump grain in the center bin you simply turn the auger off and open the bin door.
Johnson estimates his total cost at $1,600 which included the auger and electric motor
