Squeeze Arms Gently Handle Big Round Bales
New attachment for your front-end loader picks up plastic-wrapped round bales with-out puncturing the plastic covering and also works great on unwrapped bales that would otherwise be difficult to pick up with a conventional bale spear, according to Worksaver, Inc., Litchfield, Ill.

The "Bale Hugger" consists of a pair of 46-in. long looped squeeze arms attached to a 6-ft. long rectangular steel backstop which mounts on tractor loader arms in place of a bucket. The squeeze arms are made from 3-in. dia. round tubing. One arm is stationary. A hydraulic cylinder on the other arm moves it inward to grasp the bale in a tight hug.
"The round arms provide a tremendous amount of surface contact that lets you get a good grip on slippery plastic without puncturing it," says Roger Hoffland, general sales manager. "As you pick up a plastic-wrapped bale you can hear the plastic stretch, but it won't break. It works equally well for loading unwrapped bales, especially heavy bales with tight cores that are difficult for bale spears to penetrate. The Bale Hugger squeezes like a pincers which lets you pick up bales by their ends or sides. That makes it great for stacking. Because of the design of the arms, you can stack bales with just 3 in. between them. The bale arms also allow you to lower bales into a tub grinder more gently than a bale spear."
The unit can be mounted on most front-end loaders. "We recommend using the Bale Hugger only on tractors equipped with wide front ends and a roll-over protective structure," says Hoffland. "The operator should counterbalance the tractor with another bale or counterweight on the rear of the tractor."
