Tire Caddy Carries Combine Duals COMBINES Accessories 34-1-4 Moving a Case IH or New Holland combine with duals just got a whole lot easier and safer. The Tire Caddy, invented by a custom combiner, makes dropping duals and driving down a road or loading on a trailer a snap.
"Duane Keller is a custom cutter from Ellis, Kan. who has to haul ever bigger and wider combines and duals from farm to farm across the wheat belt," says Chris Gross, Lankota Group. "He came up with the Tire Caddy after asking himself if he wanted his 16-year old daughter to meet a modern combine with duals on a two-lane road."
The Tire Caddy attaches to header hookups on Case IH and New Holland combines. The operator simply removes the header and replaces it with the Tire Caddy. He then drives the combine's inside wheel up on a block, removes the nuts on the dual and rolls it ahead a couple of feet to line it up with the Tire Caddy.
"Attaching the tire is easy," says Gross. "The operator or a helper leans it against the vertical arm on the Tire Caddy. The arm grabs the rim of the wheel and lifts it up when the operator raises the header mount. Once off the ground, the wheel is lined up with two bolts and fastened in place with two lug nuts."
Gross says the Tire Caddy eliminates the need for a separate hoist or farm tractor with loader to lift duals onto a truck for transport to the next farm. "All too often an operator has to sit and wait until the farmer or his hired man shows up with that extra tractor," explains Gross.
The Tire Caddy is priced at $960 (members of the U.S. Custom Harvester Association are eligible for a significant discount). Gross says that while the basic design developed by Keller is unchanged, Lankota Group uses the latest in laser cutting and computerized bending and welding. The Tire Caddy is fabricated from 4 by 2-in. tubular steel with 1/4-in. walls.
