Hand-Held String Trimmer CROPS Straw 33-4-31 "After looking at the price of commercial string trimmers, I came up with a simple trimmer of my own that I call the Hillbilly Weed Wacker," says Jeff Hoard, Austin, Nev.
"I had some high-density poly (HDPE) laying around so I cut out a 4-in. disc. I drilled a 5/16-in. hole right in the center, squared the hole with a file, and then drilled two 3/32-in. holes 180 degrees apart, 1/4 in. from the edge of the disc. I inserted a 2 5/16-in. carriage bolt with square ęshoulders' on it through the center hole with a nut and washer on it. Lastly, I inserted a piece of store-bought line into the two small holes. I bought a pack of 12 16-in. long ęstrings' for $2.69.
"It works great for trimming grass. Although I have to bend down to use it, I've found that's an advantage because it gives me more precise control around plants and trees, eliminating the damage people often get with larger trimmers. Be sure to wear safety glasses because you're close to the action," says Hoard.
