Doubled-Up Combine Bin Extension COMBINES Accessories 14-1-9 A home-built, 150-bu. fold-down extension on a Deere 9600 combine increased total hopper capacity to 400 bu. for Truman, Minn., farmer Ronald Schultz.
He bought the combine equipped with a factory-built extension. He mounted his extension between the grain tank and factory extension. Schultz's extension is made from expanded steel mesh and folds down when five pins are removed.
"I built it because I wanted to be able to make a complete 1 mile round trip with my 8-row corn head," says Schultz. "Deere doesn't recommend adding an extension other than their own, but it hasn't bothered my combine at all. I had built an extension for my 8820 combine which provided 450 bu. total capacity. How-ever, it was wider than the original grain tank and the extra weight caused the sides of the tank to buckle. When I narrowed that extension so that it went straight up from the tank, it solved the problem, but reduced total capacity to 350 bu. When I sold the 8820 I kept the extension and modified it to fit my new combine. The extension is 11 in. wider than the grain tank and is offset to the left to offset the weight of the grain tank which is mounted on the right side of the combine."
The extension consists of a 2 ft., 3 in. high mesh screen, originally designed for Butler grain dryers, mounted on top of a 9-in. metal panel. The mesh screen is hinged so each of the five sections can be folded down separately. When folded, the combine returns to its original height for storing indoors. The bottom part of Schulz's extension is bolted to the top of the grain tank. The top part is bolted to the Deere extension with the same bolts that originally secured the Deere extension to the grain tank.
Schultz installed a 3-ft. long vertical auger in the center of the extension to lift grain away from the original auger. The add-on auger is powered by an orbit motor hooked up to the hydraulic hoses that drive the combine's reel.
