New Rig Deep Places Dry Fertilizer FERTILIZER APPLICATION Fertilizer Application (58f) 8-5-3 Latest new development in the fast-growing trend towards "deep placement of dry fertilizer" is a self-contained applicator from DMI, Goodfield, Ill., that's especially suited for fall application on ground you want to fall fertilize but don't want to chisel, plow or disk.
"It's tailor made for farmers who are into no-till or ridge planting, and for corn-soybean farmers who no longer primary till soybean stubble in the fall," says Larry VanEtten, product manager, about DMI's new 2200 Dri-Flo applicator.
For fields slated for planting to corn or soybeans, it's designed to place dry fertilizer in 30 in. bands 6 to 9 in. deep. For fields going into small grain, it places the fertilizer in 15 in. bands 4 to 6 in. deep.
The rig is equipped with a 9,000 lb. capacity hopper and is available with 8 shanks on 30 in. centers, or 15 shanks on 15 in. centers. It's ground driven and easily adjusts without tools for application rates ranging from 150 to 500 lbs. per acre (up to 1,000 lbs. with optional sprockets).
Last year, DMI introduced a "piggy back" Dri-Flo attachment for mounting on disks or chisel plows. On a chisel plow, the chisels can be removed to convert the mounted unit for deep placement of dry fertilizer without doing any tillage.
"Our new 2200 Dry-Flo is similar except that it's self-contained and designed for the farmer who wants to take advantage of fall-applied fertilizer placed deep into the ground, but doesn't want to do any fall tillage," explains VanEtten. "A key feature of our new applicator is that it can go right into straw or stalks to deep place dry fertilizer with 95% or better accuracy across its full width. And, compared to air systems, it has very few moving parts and thus requires very little maintenance. What's more, you can use it to deep place dry fertilizer only, a combination of dry and anyhdrous, or liquid fertilizer."
