"It works better than conventional composting methods because it removes most of the odors, and because it works fast," says Don Shubin, Compost Systems, Tustin, Calif.
The "In-Vessel" compost system has attracted interest from large livestock farms, restaurants, and others - anywhere there are large piles of smelly waste.
"This is a commercial size unit," says Shubin. "It's designed to handle 10 to 50 tons of manure at a time. Prices start at about $100,000."
The composter can handle manure with moisture contents of up to 75 to 80 percent such as lagoon manure that's slightly thicker than a slurry. It uses a combination of vertical augers and piped-in air to break the manure down into compost. The oxygen accelerates the composting process. A compressor, powered by either an electric or gas motor, delivers the air into the bottom part of the unit and disperses it throughout the vessel. At the same time, the augers compress the material and extrude the moisture. A tarp on top contains the air within the vessel. The cleansed air is exhausted through a biofilter in the middle of the roof.
A skid loader or conveyor can be used to load manure into the composter.
"It works fast and completely gets rid of manure odors. One machine can compost 25 to 50 tons of manure in only about 10 days," says Shubin. "On the other hand, windrowed manure can take about 60 days to compost. We can also connect three or four machines together in series to multiply the volume.
"We've had a lot of interest from big California dairy farms concerned about odor management and are demonstrating it on a trial basis."
Compost Systems is a waste hauling company and developed the equipment for use with solid waste that's collected from restaurants in towns and cities. "The material is hauled to our site where we compost it. The idea is to keep such material out of landfills."
