Think the world is overpopulated? That's what I thought. And then somone told me that if all the people in the world stood shoulder-to-shoulder, they wouldn't even fill up the state of Rhode Island. So I got out my atlas and calculator and started figuring.

And then somone told me that if all the people in the world stood shoulder-to-shoulder, they wouldn't even fill up the state of Rhode Island. So I got out my atlas and calculator and started figuring.
• Rhode Island is the smallest state in the U.S., at just 1,545 square miles. One square mile contains 27,878,400 sq. ft. Therefore, Rhode Island has 43,072,128,000 sq. ft. of "standing room".
• If each of the approximately 6.5 billion people in the world were given 4 sq. ft. to stand in (an area measuring 2 by 2 ft.), they would occupy 26,000,000,000 sq. ft.
• So all the people in the world could stand shoulder-to-shoulder in Rhode Island and they would only fill up a little more than half of the state!
• To put that in perspective, Minnesota (the 12th largest state) is 54 times larger than Rhode Island. Texas is 173 times larger. And Alaska is even bigger than Texas.
So don't let anyone tell you the planet is getting too crowded! There's plenty of room!
