"Poor Man's" Sidewalk Edger FARM HOME Miscellaneous 30-3-30 "My homemade sidewalk edger is really simple. That's probably why it works so well and is so fast," says Jerry Doffing, Frederic, Wis.
The two-handled edger consists of the working end of a garden-type hoe, a bicycle-type handlebar grip, and a long bolt with the head cut off that's welded to the middle part of the hoe blade. The other end of the bolt threads into a nut that's embedded into an aluminum handle with finger grooves in it.
To use the edger, Doffing slips the blade in next to the sidewalk and then uses both hands to pull the blade toward him, cutting through any grass growing over the walk.
"I use it on the sidewalk that leads from my house to the garage. It makes a nice, smooth cut that really looks good," says Doffing. "I sharpened both sides of the blade so it really cuts good. Once I start pulling on the blade, it slices through the grass like a hot knife goes through butter. I wear gloves in case I accidentally scrape my hand against the sidewalk.
"You can use any type of handle you want on the edger. I just used what I had on hand."
