Low-Cost Gate Opening System FENCING Gates 29-1-42 I used a section of old tire casing to come up with a low-cost gate opening system that holds my free-swinging feedlot gate in place. It lets me open the gate by simply bumping it with my tractor. I sawed off an 8-in. section of a 16-in. tire and then cut it in half lengthwise. Then I lag bolted both sections to a 2 by 6 board that's screwed onto the gate post. The open edges of the tire's bead face the gate, and the gate is held secure between the two sections. You need to use a fairly heavy tire, at least 6-ply, in order to keep the wind from blowing the gate out of the flaps. You don't want to use a steel belted tire because it would be too hard to saw.
I use a chain to secure the gate whenever I'm not going through it, to keep livestock from pushing it open. Before, when I left the tractor to open the gate, livestock might get out.
