Tire Pressure Monitor Alerts You To Problems TIRES/WHEELS Miscellaneous 28-1-10 A new tire pressure monitor can be installed on any vehicle, alerting you when pressure drops on any tire. A SmarTire sensor straps to each wheel, inside the tire. Each sensor is powered by a lithium battery and is activated at 5 mph or more by a centrifugal switch. The sensors check pressure every 7 seconds and transmit immediately if they detect a pressure change of 3 psi or more since the last transmission. If there is no major pressure change, the sensors have a default transmission interval of 4 to 7 minutes. The sensors transmit signals to a receiver that's powered by a cigarette lighter socket or hard-wired to its 12-volt battery. If a loss in pressure develops, the driver will immediately be alerted by a LED warning light on the receiver. If the tire pressure continues to drop, the light will begin to flash and a buzzer will sound. "By identifying problems early, the driver has time to safely stop the vehicle and avoid more seriously damaging the tire, wheel or vehicle," says John Bolegoh, SmarTire Systems, Inc., Richmond, British Columbia. The system can be upgraded with the addition of a full function LCD display unit that allows the driver to read the actual pressure and temperature values at each tire location.
