Log Splitter Breaks Beads WOODLOT EQUIPMENT Wood Splitters 27-4-39 "I use my vertical log splitter to break the beads on car and implement wheels. It works slicker than a whistle," says Dick Carey, Shell Rock, Iowa.
Carey bought the splitter from a neighbor who had built it. It uses a pto-operated pump to drive a 10-ton hydraulic cylinder with a V-shaped wedge that Carey welded onto it. The cylinder mounts on top of a rectangular steel frame. A hand-operated control on back of the splitter is used to raise and lower it.
To break the bead, Carey places the tire on top of a 1-ft. long wooden block inside the frame opening.
