Bareback Pads Make Better Riders LIVESTOCK Horses/Mules 26-6-37 Horse enthusiasts know that riding bareback makes you a better rider because without a saddle horn to hang on to, novice riders have to learn balance and the feel of the horse. A new "bareback pad" simulates the feel of bareback while still providing the rider with some of the protection offered by a saddle. The Lady Godiva Bareback Pad, from Best Friend Equine Supply Co., relies on Cordura canvas fabric and a steel tooth buckle to help its riders stay in place. Co-owner Carol Vandre says the fabric, which is rot and mildew resistant, seems to grip the horse better than other fabrics, and the steel tooth gives unlimited adjustments to the girth even while riding. Padding is high-density foam, so it keeps its shape. The Lady Godiva also offers extra padding in the withers area, which Vandre says is uncommon in other pads. A pommel strap does provide a rider with some security should it be needed. The 2-in. wide strap comes with a removable black fleece cover. "My business partner likes to ride bareback, but she wasn't satisfied with available pads," says Vandre. "She wanted one that didn't slip. This one is convenient for hopping on a horse without bothering with saddle gear." Pads are available in English style for $49.95 and Trail style for $59.95. Best Friend will soon be carrying another pad for the serious trail rider, notes Vandre.
