What makes the splitter different is that the splitting table tilts up from horizontal to vertical in seconds simply by pulling a pin. So if you have a big chunk, rather than lifting it onto the table, you simply tilt the splitter up and roll the log into place.
The 2-way splitter is powered by a 24-in. cylinder that was purchased new. It mounts on a 6-ft. long, 8-in. I-beam that rests on a piece of heavy square tubing. It's fitted with a 3-pt. hitch for moving from place to place.
The splitter can be disconnected from the tractor for stand-alone use thanks to legs at either end. "It's stable enough to operate without being hooked to the tractor's 3-pt. hitch. We power it with hydraulics from our International 434. My days of wielding an axe are over," says Topp.
