"It frees up your pickup and allows one person to feed either one or two bales at a time. It also produces uniform flake sizes," says inventor Miller.
His "EZ Flake" holds two 4 by 8 big square bales and is powered by an electric motor that operates off the vehicle's 12-volt battery. The unit is equipped with two sets of conveyor chains, one for each bale. A front-end loader is used to load bales one at a time from the back of the trailer.
The machine is designed so that either one or two bales can be fed at a time. The operator changes the position of a spring-loaded handle on the machine if he wants to feed either the front or rear bale separately. All other controls are operated from the pickup cab.
To feed a bale, you remove the top and bottom strings and then tie the remaining strings to a pair of rotating metal drums that mount at the front and back of the machine. The drums automatically wind up the strings as the bale feeds off the side of the trailer. A motorized rotating flaker bar, which mounts at the top of the unit, pulls off flakes of hay.
"It offers a lot of versatility. You can feed both bales at the same time, or you can feed one bale and then go to another location and feed the other one," says Miller. "Mounting the flaker bar on top results in much more uniform flake size than mounting it at the bottom, as on other machines. The rotating drums keep the strings tight as the bale is flaked. Keeping the strings on the bale prevents a partially-flaked bale from falling backward off the opposite side of the trailer."
