Hand-Operated Clutch Lever TRACTORS Modifications 26-4-8 When Jim Schreifels, Watkins, Minn., broke his ankle just before planting season, he came up with a way to keep from having to get on and off his tractors every time he needed to engage the pto. He installed a hand clutch that can be engaged from the ground.
The hand-operated clutch consists of a 1 1/2-in. wide, 3/8-in. thick, 33-in. long vertical steel bar equipped with a 10-in. long horizontal section at the bottom that clamps to the existing clutch pedal with four bolts. A 6-in. length of 3/4-in. dia. pipe that just clears the steering wheel serves as a handle.
"I use it on my Deere 4230 tractor, as well as my Deere 40 and 50 series tractors," says Schreifels. "It requires no tractor modification and doesn't interfere with normal operation by a non-handicapped driver. In the fall of the year I re-installed the lever on my Deere 4450 tractor to assist slowing the forward speed while unloading silage in my bunker silo, in order to ease the pressure on my ankle."
To use a hand clutch like this one, Schreifels says you must be certain to have all guards in place on the pto.
