New way to dry and aerate grain CROPS New Techniques 13-4-29 Conventional bin-drying systems dry only from the bottom up. Now comes the new Helfer System from Grain Guard Mfg., Edmonton, Alb., that dries from the bottom up, and from the center out.
"Our new system reduces static pressure by up to 2 in., resulting in up to 50% less drying time compared to conventional duct systems," says Herb Anderson, co-owner.
The Helfer System consists of a horizontal, Y-shaped duct positioned above the bin floor (the optional "Suspend-Air" mounting system lifts the duct high enough to allow a sweep unloading auger to operate underneath), and a vertical center section 6 to 10 ft. tall, depending on bin size. The circular ducts (horizontal and vertical) are 15 in. in dia. and made of expanded metal.
Cost to equip a 19 ft. dia. bin, for ex-ample, is $500. "One man working alone can install a complete above-floor system in less than an hour," says Anderson. "In bins already equipped with a perforated false drying floor, we suggest adding only the vertical Helfer duct at a cost of about $170."
For large bins, Grain Guard offers vertical "wall wings" to ensure rapid, uniform drying of grain in the lower part of the bin along the outside wall.
A "wall wing" consists of a louvered 8 ft. high duct with a solid back, a self-cleaning peaked cap, and an open bottom. It ties into a single port on back side which exhausts air through bin wall and outside. From 3 to 6 "wall wings" are attached to inside wall of large bins, depending on diameter.
Grain Guard offers an open core, double walled vertical "Rocket Duct" aerator for hopper-bottom bins with up to 10,000 bu. capacity. It's 100% self-cleaning ù the screen louvers face downward so seeds don't get caught in perforations. Self-leveling legs allow the Rocket Duct to adapt to any slope hopper. Available in 30 or 45 in. dia., and in 4, 6 or 8 ft. heights.
